Re-Connecting

When I got sick, our world became very small. Besides our families, we reduced it to just a few people. The focus had to be on the disease and getting better. This year has been the first time since 2004 that we have been expanding instead of constricting our lives.

David was still living at home with his mom when we first met him in 1975. We had just moved to our little town and he lived around the corner. He used to pass our house and noticed a lot of really cool racecars in our driveway. Later, he told us that he and other local guys who also became friends would sneak a peek at the cars at night with flashlights.

He finally worked up the courage to introduce himself. I think he ended up almost living with us though he did go home to sleep. He hung out with us for years. Finally, he began going out on dates, performing music, and finding life somewhere else.

Suddenly, Lori appeared in 1981. She embraced us as friends. We have found that usually the new woman dismisses friends of the man. Not Lori. I always admired her for welcoming us into their life.

They married and had a son on the same day but a different year as our son.

We have recently reconnected and met for dinner together last night at a local Italian restaurant. In the photo above, we actually sat at the window table. As I still have not fully recovered from the play in the city a week ago, we made early reservations.

We arrived at the restaurant at 6:30 and left about 9:30. There was never a pause in the conversation. The food was amazing. Three of us had the pasta bolognaise and Michael had the simple tomato and basil pasta. I am looking forward to the other half of mine for lunch today!

We talked and laughed and got caught up with each other’s lives. Their son just completed his education and testing to become a high school teacher. God love him.

Wonderful friends. Wonderful evening. The best of life.
