Weekend of Song, Donuts and Spiderman

In a past blog, I wrote that my biggest regret was that I did not see my niece often enough while she was growing up. She is grown. We finally got together. Just the two of us.

Shelley drove down from Sacramento in time for a lunch of grilled fish tacos. We stayed talking at the empty restaurant for almost two hours. Finally, we drove home where the conversation continued through the evening. After a few hours, I made a quick dinner of scallops with a side salad of avocado, kiwi and red onions before we took off for the city.

Christien had arranged tickets for the latest version of “West Side Story” as a gift to me.  They were amazing seats - Row M center. Close enough to see the actors faces but far enough to not see the makeup. I was worried about the parking situation at that particular theatre but we found a very close lot.

I have to say that Shelley looked adorable. She wore flat shoes, tights, black short skirt (she is very tall) and a very cool over blouse that looked like it was hand painted silk made around 1920. She topped it off with a gorgeous black coat and a matching 20's style black felt hat. Everyone looked at her and the bartender flirted with her because she was just so cute!

This version of "West Side Story" was the most recently one from Broadway which featured Spanish in some of the dialogue and songs. I was skeptical. It actually worked very well.

We fell into bed around midnight and were back in the city around 10:00 Sunday morning at the wonderful Dynamo Donuts where she experienced the famous apple donuts topped with maple and bacon. A moment of silence inserted here. They are impossible to describe. We sent a half dozen of various flavors home with her to share with her boyfriend.

The weather here was so beautiful. It was sunny and warm, probably in the mid-70's. Michael and I opened the sunroof and rolled down the windows. We did some shopping on the Peninsula. Waiting for a store to open, we sat on a bench and just drank in the day. Afterwards, we drove the long way home over the mountain through the huge redwoods to the ocean. We went to the famous Duarte's where we split their small crab sandwich - perfect size - and Michael had some of their famous apricot pie.

We sat out back in our new garden and just enjoyed the weather before the ball game. Quickly, we realized that time was a-wastin' and Winnie, Oliver and their parents were to arrive soon for some Trick or Treating just before dark. We made a quick dinner from leftovers, served cookies and hot spiced cider and enjoyed the evening with Natalie's family. Winnie was adorable dressed up as Spiderman, muscles and all. She loved running door to door. When one of the neighbor talked with her, she said, "You are a very nice man." He laughed and loved it.

I was snoring by 9:00.

My calendar had been very empty for two weeks as I was in recovery mode trying to get some energy back after a very busy few months. I will need a few days to recover from such busy weekend.
