Texas. One huge state. We stayed on the west side of Dallas so we really didn't get to know the city. We drove on to Abilene. I had high expectations of a dusty cowboy city. It was a huge disappointment. As we continued west, we stopped for lunch in a tiny town of Snyder, which was charming. Kind of what I expected in Abilene. From there we turned onto an even smaller two lane road to Brownfield. We were driving through oil and gas country and this was a town in the middle of nowhere with hotels for those industries. The downtown area was very sad with empty old buildings surrounding a square of government offices. We had dinner at Honey's where everything on the menu was fried. Everything. We had our first fried pickles and they were delicious. Michael had country fried steak and gravy. I thought I was ordering steak bites and was shocked when they arrived covered in saltine cracker crumbs and fried. Gravy on the side. I left 2 of the 3 pieces. Foiled again!
At the last town in Texas at the border, I was in heaven looking at the old buildings. They were 1860ish, run down but still standing. We were so busy looking around that we didn't notice the 20mph signs. Sirens and lights. Michael was pulled over for speeding. License, registration and proof of insurance. A long wait. Finally, he came back to the car and gave Michael a written WARNING! Yes, you read that right. We chatted with him for over 15 minutes. A really nice, young kid. We must have looked very old to him!
We drove the tiny road all through New Mexico with beautiful vistas. Highway 380. We stopped in Lincoln where they are still making money off the event of Billy the Kid breaking out of their jail. Finally, we arrived in Socorro early enough to have lunch with Chip and Betty. Famous Green Chili Cheeseburgers at the Owl Cafe. Today, we are going out on their new boat and will enjoy more green chilies. Delicious.
