I have been put in charge of Winnie’s garden while they are on vacation for just over a week. The entire family flew to Chicago on Wednesday to see Winnie’s Grandma Jane, Ethan’s sister and family, and his father and family. They have plans to see the Lincoln Park Zoo, the Shedd Aquarium and the Museum of Science and Industry. It is going to be a busy time.
Natalie is blessed with a wonderful mother-in-law. Jane is an almost retired school teacher and just adores and understands her grandchildren. Staying with her is a much-needed break for Natalie. They have developed a lovely relationship.
When they got married, Natalie thought that Ethan should be the contact person for his mom. Wrong! I have always felt that it is the new daughter-in-law who must extend a hand of friendship to her new in-laws and it is up to her to make sure the relationship is good. I know that there are truly evil mother-in-laws but most just want to feel included in the new family.
Natalie took this information and ran with it. They often talk on the phone together and she shares stories about the children and their lives. Jane feels she knows them even though she sees them only two or three times a year. What a gift.
Two weeks ago, Natalie and Winnie planted a garden around their small patio. I must make sure it has enough water while they are gone. I am going to their home every other day, give the garden a sprinkle and check the answering machine. Natalie had applied for a terrific full-time job at a highly regarded school over the hill. She is waiting to hear from them. Fingers crossed.
On the day they are due home, I will go to the organic market and stock their pantry. They don’t need to have to run to the store the moment they return home after a long flight with two young children. It is my gift to them. I feel so blessed to have this little family in my life.
