What is it about being around kids that so lifts my spirits? Winnie, Oliver and their mom Natalie came by for a visit yesterday. I had looked up recipes for kids on the net, found a great one for Apple Squares and had all the ingredients ready on the counter for us to cook together. Usually when they come through the door, Winnie knocks and I always said in a loud voice, "Who could possibly be at my door?" She is always giggling as she comes into the house. But Oliver usually arrives in mom arms and it takes a few moments for him to feel comfortable. But yesterday, I just stepped aside as he ran into the house. He is going to be two-years old on Saturday and is talking like an expert! Great vocabulary!
The cooking began. Winnie did all the mixing and got it into the pan with a sprinkle of cinnamon and sugar on top. Then we played until it was baked. Boy, did we play. We played with the wooden train that was set up, danced to the musical greeting cards we have saved through the years, made our own mazes with pens and paper and decorated ourselves with stickers before the timer went off. While waiting for it to cool, we went out to the street and played with their scooter and little car.
That is when it happened. Oliver loved riding down our driveways. He found the steepest one on the street, hauled his little car to the very, very top of the driveway and let loose. He had a huge grin on his face while flying down the driveway. It was totally scaring Natalie.
One last run. His angle was wrong and he hit an edge of the driveway and fell head first onto the street. I heard the horrible sound of a melon being thumped. It was his head. Oliver and Winnie both have huge heads - or as Winnie says: We are a big head family - that he always seems to have a bruise somewhere on his forehead. He hits it so often that the doctor told Natalie that she didn't have to bring him in unless there was blood involved. Well, there was blood involved and he had a huge bump, just in time for his birthday photos!
She made an appointment to see the doctor while we cut the Apple Squares. The kids loved them and I sent most of it home with them. We always save a piece of whatever we bake for Michael. Then, we went to the little park where we watched as Oliver climbed and used the slides and ran around the open fields. Normal. A good sign.
They took off and I headed to the rehab class. It felt good to get back to my normal routine. I phoned Natalie when I got home and learned that the doctor said Oliver was fine. Deep sigh of relief.
